This website is a personal exploration of the Five Realms or Five Khands mentioned by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder and first Guru of Sikhism in Japji Sahib composition. On this website, each Realm has been related to a philosophy going from the most concrete to the abstract in this order:
This project is a work in progress and some areas would need to be developed further in order to provide a systematic approach based loosely on the Five Realms. The composition, Japji Sahib, in which these Realms are mentioned is poetic in nature, consequently the relationship to philosophical epistemological systems is not immediately apparent. For this reason, I have attempted to relate the different khands or realms to the appropriate philosophical system. The khands when taken together provide an expansive epistemological approach to knowledge gained from a variety of faculties and sources. The first two realms, Empirical and Theoretical, tend to be grounded in methodology, while ethical has practical application within jurisprudence and universal applications in areas of universal human rights principles. The final two realms, holistic and universal, are highly abstract in nature, and therefore difficult to describe. Holistic realm provides overarching principles that connect with values for growth and expansion, while Universal realm deals with ubiquitous and global principles that allow for an understanding of unity behind diversity of culture, race, gender, belief and practice. | |
