Saram Khand in Japji Sahib |
As described below Saram Khand is centered on an ethical development where, along with ethical purity, awareness, judgment and intelligence are fashioned. The primacy is given to the word as the form of expression:
"The Realm of Effort takes form as the word Fashioned are forms of indescribable beauty there Of these description is difficult to narrate One who tries will later regret (the effort) There fashioned are awareness, judgement and intelligence There fashioned is purity of warriors and ascetics" (Japji 36) |
Use in Education |
At times values need to be considered in terms of their ethical impact. Legislation and legal cases need to be considered in terms of compliance with legal obligations for schools and school boards in Ontario.
Some of the laws that need to be considered include:
Along with the legislation mentioned above, human rights, moral and ethical principles need to be also considered including for participation of individuals in research. As school boards in Ontario operate in a mixed work environment with a variety of professionals and respective regulatory bodies, professional standards of regulatory bodies also need to be considered for staff and employees. |
Equity and Inclusion |
When specifically considering diversity and inclusion at schools and school boards in Ontario, the recognition of the legal mandate is important. However, ethical, moral and human rights also need to be considered in order to provide inclusive and equitable education for all students. At times school administrators and leaders face competing values and controversial issues arise, such as resistance to Ontario's new sex education curriculum, or to inclusion of the LGBTQ books in the classroom particularly by conservative religious communities. Grappling with these ethical issues, taking a legally and morally defensible stand, and providing a respectful answer to concerned community members are important.
In part this may require to respectfully and succinctly communicate the legal, moral and ethical mandate to parents in the public education system. For example, to explain that the school or school board is committed to equity and inclusion of all communities including LGBTQ. Consequently, material in the classroom is selected in order to reflect the identity of all students. The school and school board are also committed to fostering a safe climate for all students and committed to anti-bullying efforts. Schools, school boards and universities need to provide training that allows leaders and educators to understand legal, ethical and moral background of issues within the classroom, in schools and at school boards. Some questions that might be explored from an ethical and legal perspective may include:
